When I received my vascular dementia diagnosis about 2 years ago, I wrote a handful of songs that were, admittedly, kinda maudlin and morbid. Three of them – “I Will Be There With You,” “To Get Next To You,” and this one, “Be Home Soon” were written from the point of view from someone who was not here anymore. I wasn’t depressed about my situation, but I did perseverate a bit about not knowing how long I’d be around, or how long I’d be functioning well enough to write, play guitar, sing, and record my tunes.
As this song developed, musically and arrangement-wise, it evolved into something more upbeat and cathartic. Now, when I sing this song, I no longer think about my demise; I imagine singing to anyone experiencing any kind of struggle. The “being home soon” referred to getting to the other side of an obstacle, or an unpleasant reality. The lyric, “this too shall pass,” appears twice in the final moments of the song. It’s a saying that I first heard my wife Gina say, but I understand it is of Persian origin. It reflects the transient nature of things – and that negative, and positive, moments in life don’t last. Change happens, people – for good or bad.
I hope this song resonates with you. If it does, please leave a comment.
Thanks for listening!

Verse 1:
Breathe deep through the gloom
Lock eyes with the moon, baby
Touch the ground
You’re safe and sound
And you’ll be home soon
Verse 2:
Try lifting that stone
You don’t have to do it alone, baby
You can stand
Take my hand
And we’ll be home soon
Bridge 1:
Through the dark
Baby you just gotta make it through the dark
I know it’s hard
Bone crushing
Soul crushing
Faith crushing
Life crushing hard
Verse 3:
Turn your head to the light
I swear that it’s worth the fight, baby
This can’t last
This shall pass
And you’ll be home soon
Instrumental break
Bridge 2:
Through the dark
Baby you just gotta make it through the dark
I know it’s hard
Back breaking
Head shaking
Tears making
Life taking hard
Verse 4:
Turn your head to the light
I swear it’s worth the fight, baby
‘Cause this can’t last
This shall pass
And you’ll be home soon
Yeah this can’t last
This too shall pass
And we’ll be home soon
